John Storch: Ozaukee EarthCaches
In addition to the official Treasures of Oz geocaches, there are also several EarthCaches in the Ozaukee area. Where a typical geocache has you looking for a physical container that someone has hidden, an EarthCache site is a special place that people can visit to learn about a unique geoscience feature or aspect of our Earth. Visitors to EarthCache sites can see how our planet has been shaped by geological processes, how we manage the resources and how scientists gather evidence to learn about the Earth. More about EarthCaches can be found at www.earthcache.org
The EarthCache sites in Ozaukee include:
Cedarburg Bog – One EarthCache explains how the bog was initially carved out by glaciers while another tells how plant life filled it up creating a number of different unique ecosystems.
Grafton Lime Kilns – This EarthCache talks about making lime from limestone.
