The Big Sit! is an annual, international, noncompetitive birding event founded by the New Haven (CT) Bird Club, hosted by Bird Watcher's Digest, and sponsored by Swarovski Optik.
Some people have called it a "tailgate party for birders." Today there are Big Sit! circles all over the world, including Guatemala, India, the Netherlands, England, Vietnam, and New Zealand.
The simplicity of the concept makes The Big Sit! appealing. Find a good spot for bird watching - preferably one with good views of a variety of habitats and lots of birds. Next, create a real or imaginary circle 17 feet in diameter and sit inside the circle for 24 hours, counting all the bird species you see or hear. That's it. Find a spot, sit in it, have fun.
The Western Great Lakes Bird and Bat Observatory’s FBMP Migrants team will conduct its 5th annual Big Sit! on the Bill Cowart Memorial Hawk Watch Platform located in the northeastern corner of the Forest Beach Migratory Preserve on October 12. Species totals for the first 3 counts were 40, 50, and 59, but in almost a constant rain last year, only 34 wet species were tallied. The platform will be occupied before dawn until who knows what time; it depends on the weather, bird activity, and the will-power of observers. And, if the winds are right, we might even encounter a nice migration of raptors. Please stop by and help or just visit. Noel
Directions: North from Port Washington on CTH LL. Turn right on CTH P at the Squires billboard.
