We are truly having an old-fashioned winter so far, with lots of snow - and that means outdoor play time, not just for kids, but for all of us. For those of us who stress over invasive plants, this is the perfect, stress-free, time to be out and about as there is nothing to pull, or cut, or even to see. Just enjoy!
The golf courses at Mee Kwon Park and Hawthorne Hills, and the trails at Harrington Beach, Blue Heron Wildlife Preserve, Riveredge and Forest Beach Migratory Preserve are our recommendations for cross-country skiing. Riveredge has the only groomed trails around and a ski pass for there is not expensive. They also have snowshoes available for members. Harrington Beach requires a state parks sticker . All other trails in the county are free.
Snowshoeing works wherever parks and preserves exist. Huiras Lake, Kurtz Woods and Tendick might make for interesting adventures. When weather permits, there is skating on the pond and Mee Kwon and the warming shed is open. Mule Hill at Mee Kwon is the most popular sledding hill in the county. Lots of places have little ones that are just waiting for kids and sleds to appear.
Let us know if you have discovered any notable sledding spots, especially beautiful places for skiing or snowshoeing. Send your photos as well. Contact
