  • Fish and aquatic life move around streams to reproduce, grow, and survive. Both stream ingress and egress (entering and exiting) are crucial. Human activities can directly or indirectly create barriers that inhibit access to existing habitats. This affects species abundance & distribution, genetic diversity, and recreational opportunities.
    • Habitat is dependent on water quality, temperature, velocity, and depth as well as channel shape and substrate, aquatic plants, predator/prey relationships and other factors.
    • Many aquatic organisms require significantly differing habitat for various stages and function of life.
    • Native species have been documented to migrate long distances.

  • Removing barriers will increase available habitat, benefitting resident and potomodromous fish populations, including several species of concern, throughout our watershed.
